Course Description
In the beginning of this part of the course, you will study patterns of inheritance and how biologists can analyze the chromosome structures of an organism. The DNA molecule is the molecule of life. You will investigate the structure of DNA and learn how it is used to create proteins in the body. You will also look at mutations that can occur in the body and study their relationship to cancer. Next, you will explore various genetic engineering techniques and their real-world applications. You will also analyze the ethics of using these techniques. At the end of this part, you will start looking at the different kingdoms of life, including bacteria, protists, fungi, and plants. You will also examine viruses and be able to determine whether they are living organisms.
You will begin this part of the course by looking at the different types of animals, discovering the characteristics that all animals share as well as what makes each group of animals unique. Next, you will explore the human body and the interconnected nature of the body systems. The course then moves into a study of ecology. You will examine the structure of ecosystems and what distinguishes each biome. You will learn how organisms interact with one another and how populations of different species change with changing conditions. You will explore different natural cycles and examine the impact pollution and human activity have on the environment. You will study the mechanisms of evolution, how species adapt over time, and how new species develop. In addition, you will examine the evidence for Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution and look at how related organisms are organized to show their ancestry.
